The Golden City

I loved our time in San Francisco.  It's a fun city to walk around and photograph.   It seems I've eschewed humanity for animals in this post...but I'm ok with that.

Three landscapes in one.

The yin and yang of sea lions.

Alcatraz.

How the Golden Gate Bridge (which is red during the daytime) got its name...or at least that's what
   I'd like to think.

Returning to Pennsylvania

Driving down these familiar roads I'm wrapped in the beauty and comfort of a quilt of spruce, pines, oaks, maples and elms.  Such a variety blurs into a harmony of green.

This place sings to me, it's in my marrow, every cell, it whispers sweet nothings of the past. Each season, strongly defined, offers its own flavor of memory. Verdant summers: the buzz of bees surrounding peaches fallen from our backyard tree; cool breezes streaming through a window during a drowsy afternoon; the buttery taste of honeysuckle picked from the side of the road.  Or winter: Mittens crusted with frost from building snow men; the dizzying high of sledding down our hill until fingers and noses were numb;  foraying into the frozen swamp for daily adventures.  Or spring: blooming with dogwoods and a riot of color and flowers as dad's garden was reborn each year; the clean smell of cut grass while riding a lawn mower; chasing each other around a cherry tree in full blossom.

Now it is fall, red brushes the landscape, and I'm immersed in pumpkins, corn and mums.  I watch the orange barn painted in yellow morning sun;  walk through fields dappled in patterns of leaves and light.  This place winks at me, offers promises of the future - barefoot children running and laughing in the field, as carefree as I once was, before the weight of school, cruel classmates and the sadness of the world.  This is the only place in memory free from those burdens, untouched, in my mind, if not reality - a constant haven.  I can shut out the encroaching developments, traffic, stores, and people because there are still enough of these green, rolling hills that surround and beckon, taking me back to that place, that state, that wonderful feeling of belonging.

I know my recollections are coated with the veneer of nostalgia, but at its best, this place matches and exceeds these snippets my mind has saved. These pages of memory turn so fast they have blended into a glow of warmth and love, so that returning here will always, always feel like coming home.

Full Frame

San Fran.  A city of hills, the majestic Trans America building, and a giant naked woman.  A fun city to spend and work a week in.

This here is a full frame image.  Perhaps it's telling that I'm so dang proud of that.  I'm notorious (in my own mind) for shooting too hastily, and cropping/fixing in photoshop, so lately I've been making an effort to check my horizons (I tend to see the world crooked), and to take exact care with my framing, at least when the image itself is static.  How can I call myself a photographer otherwise?  I'm such a product of the slap and dash digital age.  Shoot now and fix or discard later.  The end result is never as good.  I wish I'd had more film training, because the value of a frame would be better instilled in me.  My professors did try.

I'm pleased (for once) with the results!

Hawaii

I never processed my photos from Kauai and the Big Island.  That trip happened right in the mania before our wedding.  They lingered at the bottom of my to do list, but circumstances pushed them to the top.  Scrolling through them invoked such a nostalgia.  Ah Hawaii.  How I miss you.  If my photos are beautiful, it's only because you are so beautiful, seductive, welcoming...I want to see you again.  Soon. I promise.

vancouver

Boys and their toys...it's only landed in the pool once or twice!

The rest of these are from hiking a small portion of the Baden Powell trail. Simply stunning (in a good way, unless you're not careful with the tricky footing, and then potentially in a bad way).  This area is a hiker's dream!

sparkling memorial day weekend

This weekend I visited PA and had a few days with the fam.  I decided it was long past due for a blog entry, so here is one of my favorite Ben moments below.  I'd like to post it as a light to honor our veterans and fallen soldiers...held by one of the cutest people I know.

Kristen & Steve's wedding

Derek and I attended the wedding of his gorgeous sister Kristen and her lovely husband Steve.  The first two pictures are taken after the wedding, outside of the Vanyo residence and in the neighboorhood, and the last two at the beach in Naples, Florida.  So glad to have spent this happy time with the Vanyo/Frey/Stucky fam!

memories of cold

As I head to a warmer climate for the next week, I leave a memory of cold London behind...

let sleeping families lie

The Roth family takes a well deserved, 10 second nap together during a brief portrait session. Their daughter, Anika Mei, arrived in this world 5 days before I took this picture.  I'm guessing this pic represents what they wish they could be doing (rather than what most of their days are like).  Love these guys.

robot restaurant

In Shinjuku, packed amongst the crowded streets of lights, Japanese pimps, and mayhem, there's a little place called Robot Restaurant.  It's advertised around Tokyo by cars towing not so little robot ladies with not so little breasts.  After descending a couple of floors to a reflective, neon tomb, sampling the meal, and having my brain almost short circuited by the overload of glow sticks, scantily clad women, and yes, dancing robots, it's a fair assessment to say that the price of admission wasn't for the food...

Valentine's Day (one week late)

I intended this for Valentine's day, but alas, I missed it by a week.  Happy belated day of love, flowers and reasons to buy Hallmark cards and boxes of chocolates.  And for those who are anti V-day, happy anti all of that!

lady in red

Beautiful sunlight, beautiful subject.  Allison, looking badass in her red dress and shades, waits to attend an awards luncheon.

Having failed miserably at my color assignment in grad school,  I'm always on the lookout for pictures where color is 'important.'  It's been 7 or 8 years now, as a fellow photoj friend said, perhaps it's time to let go!  Or maybe, we should learn from our failures but not obsess about them...there's a life lesson in there somewhere.  In any case, for the red, the light, and simply being so cool (hot?), Allison is my pic of the day.

changing of the sign

In London there's the changing of the guard.  In LA, the equivalent might be the changing of the Apple sign.  Ok, not really.  But dominating Sunset Blvd (on the Sunset Strip), dwarfing the hundreds of other large billboards, is a vertical giant that Apple has owned for as long as I can remember, and is different every time I see it.  Well, this time I caught them changing the sign.  It was about as exciting as one would expect, though I did get waves from the construction workers, and I impulsively blew them a kiss, which they cheered at.  It was certainly the excitement of my day!

In Memoriam

It's my first day working on a memorial album for Richard Zanuck, and I thought it would be easier. It feels like this ache may burst my heart if I don't stop to process.   I have been seeing, reading, and learning so much.  Richard had a big impact on my life even with our limited contact.  Multiply that exponentially, by those who knew him better, longer, or simply through sheer number of people who knew and loved him (and there were so many), and it all means being flooded today with wave after wave of memories and sorrows.  My heart breaks for everyone right now, especially those closest to him.  How to put right in our minds the loss of someone so loved, who burned so brightly?  Who, no matter his age, left us before his time?  To love and be loved is all that most of us can hope for…and Richard achieved so much more. Stacks of letters and emails speak to the amount of admiration and respect people had for him.  That doesn't mean he was perfect.  Anyone who has listened to his stories or watched the documentary will know this, but one of the wonderful things about Richard was his openness and honesty, and his ability to learn and grow.  Not to mention his wicked sense of humor and bullish determination.  He was a force to be reckoned with in life and is still a force even now.  In honor of Richard, I'm posting this scan of an ad Disney placed in Variety, with one of my photos from Alice in Wonderland.  This was only a make-up test, but he was still there, always a dependable presence.  I needed to get that out.  I suppose it is human to want to share.  I think my heart will be ok now.  Thanks for listening. Richard - you will be missed so much.

cat heaven (or hell)

While in Seoul this past December, on our day exploring, my friend Holly and I visited a cat cafe.  For those who have never heard of such a cafe, it's a place where you can go for tea or coffee....and cats.  Lots of cats.  It sounded bizarre and fun, and it turned out to be both.

Part of the scenery

Cats.  And lots of them.
Compositionally, this is my favorite photo.  It feels like a near miss though. Ideally the walking cat would be in focus.  But considering the quality of light and low shutter speed, i didn't think it would be possible, and the cat from the far right had just turned towards me.  In any case, I made my focusing decision and can't take it back now...even though I have often stared at this picture and wondered what it would look like had I chosen differently.

 Cat hammock.

The sanitary perils of a cat cafe.  Yep, this is the kitchen where all the tea and coffee is made!

life on the road

My friend Emily told me I shouldn't be overly critical of the pics I post on my blog; just to keep posting them, from day to day events, as an exercise.  In honor of her I'm posting this very ordinary picture from my stay at the Chateau Marmont in LA during the Golden Globes (no, we did not attend).  It's the only picture I felt inspired to take during our four day stay (aside from trying unsuccessfully to capture a strange, owlish, alien glow emanating from my eyes in the fog of the bathroom, but I digress).

Our life can be fun.  It can seem glamorous.  It even is, occasionally, glamorous though I rarely am.  I shook Samuel L. Jackson's hand at an airport, and met Sergeant Brody in my pajamas (I would have rather been suitably clothed, but as mentioned, I am rarely glamorous).  I have been to Russia, South Korea, Japan, France and Mexico, all in the past year.  The downside, as any traveler can tell you, is living out of a suitcase, in a constant haze of jetlag.  This picture, to me, somehow represents that balance.

maple leaves

It's a cold, cloudy, drizzly day in London.  Here's to remembering sunnier times.

In November, maple leaves carpet the landscape at the Ryōan-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan. There was something really beautiful about baskets full of leaves.  I wanted to take one home with me.

sleeping

This is one of my favorite photos from Christmas...Ben, cherubic and peaceful, my dad, a true Gallo, napping whilst balancing a glass of wine...taking this photo was like capturing the eye of the Christmas storm.  Later I will revisit Japan and post something from Seoul, but in the meantime, I offer a bit of serenity (and that's so rare these days).

hats in mexico

Just to confuse the timeline of my blog even further, I'm going back to our days in Mexico from September 2012...I'll get caught up chronologically someday.  This one's theme is hats.

Remember the two hour canal ride we took to the Island of the Dolls?  No? Well anyway, this was a shot from that boat ride.

Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, outside of Mexico city.  It dates to around 100-200 BC (except the orange stuff).

 Our tour guide.

At the restaurant La Gruta, which is built into a cave.  A fun and unique eating experience.  This picture has no hats but I threw it in there anyway.  3 out of 4 ain't bad.
